How it works
Bookkeeping work from District of Columbia
Contractors keep small business books current each month: categorizing, reconciling accounts and producing reports in QuickBooks Online, Xero or the client's own software. We are a young firm and take a limited number of contractors, so we do not promise a volume of work. We do not have an office in District of Columbia, and the work is done online.
Small businesses across District of Columbia, from Washington to smaller towns, work in sectors such as the federal government, which employed about 25% of workers in July 2022, followed by tourism, professional and business services, lobbying, think tanks and nonprofits, so contractors who know a few industries tend to fit well.
What you need
Requirements
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online, Xero or similar software
- Comfort with monthly reconciliations and clear client communication
- A computer, a reliable internet connection and a private place to work
- Willingness to keep client information confidential
- A W-9 and a signed independent contractor agreement
- Familiarity with District of Columbia filings is a plus, not a requirement
What it pays
Pay and terms
Rates are discussed on a short call and confirmed in writing before you take on any client. We do not have a posted rate. This is independent contractor work with a 1099 at year end, and you choose what you accept.
This page is not legal advice. Honest note: we are a young company, and we keep the team small so the contractors who join early get the work as it grows.
FAQ
District of Columbia bookkeeper contractor questions
Do I need a certification?
Not required. We look for real hands-on experience, and credentials such as QuickBooks ProAdvisor are a plus.
What District of Columbia filings come up?
A sales tax guide lists a 6% general rate that rises to 7% on October 1, 2026, so confirm the current rate on MyTax.DC.gov. The Office of Tax and Revenue assigns a monthly, quarterly or annual schedule, and returns are due the 20th of the month after the period. We confirm your schedule on your own MyTax.DC.gov account. Familiarity helps, and we confirm the details for each client.
Is there work right now?
We do not promise a number of clients. Applicants are contacted as work arrives.
What does it cost to join?
Nothing. We never charge to apply or to join.
