What drives the price
The number of bank and card accounts, how many transactions pass through each month, whether you have payroll, sales tax or inventory, and the state of your books today. A cleanup of months of backlog costs more than a clean monthly routine.
Common pricing models
Flat monthly fee for a defined scope, hourly rates, per-project pricing for cleanups, and tiered packages. A flat fee is easier to budget as long as the scope is written down.
What should be included
Categorizing transactions, reconciling accounts, monthly reports, and a way to ask questions. Payroll, sales tax filings, catch-up work and year-end packages for your accountant are often separate.
Comparing quotes
Ask what is covered, how many transactions the price assumes, how fast the books are closed each month, who will do the work, and what happens when volume rises. Beware of a quote that sounds low because it leaves out reconciliation.
Doing it yourself
Software makes basic bookkeeping possible for a very small business. Many owners still find the time cost higher than the fee. Consider the hours you spend and what you would do with them.
Common questions
Is bookkeeping tax deductible?
Fees paid for business bookkeeping are generally a deductible business expense. Ask your tax professional about your case.
Why do prices differ so much?
Scope, volume and experience differ. Compare what is included, not only the number.
