How it works

How it works

Type or paste one payment per line: the contractor's name, a comma, the amount, and optional words. Add card if you paid by credit card or a payment app, corp if the contractor is a corporation, and w9 if you have their W-9. Payments to the same name are added together.

Example: Jordan Lee, 1250, w9 then Jordan Lee, 900 then Pat Reyes, 400, card

FAQ

About this tracker

What does this tool do?

It adds up what you paid each contractor, leaves out card and payment-app payments, flags corporations, and shows who is at or above the reporting threshold so you can see who likely needs a Form 1099-NEC.

What is the threshold?

The IRS instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC say the threshold is $2,000 for payments made in 2026 and later, and may be adjusted for inflation beginning in 2027. The threshold box is editable so you can enter the right figure for your tax year.

Why are card payments left out?

Payments made by credit card or through a third-party payment network are reported by the payment settlement entity on Form 1099-K, not by you on Form 1099-NEC.

What about corporations?

Payments to a corporation are generally not reported on Form 1099-NEC, but there are exceptions, such as attorneys' fees. The tool flags a contractor you mark as a corporation instead of counting them, so you can check.

When are 1099-NECs due?

The IRS instructions say you must furnish the recipient copy and file with the IRS by January 31.

Does it decide whether someone is a contractor or an employee?

No. That is a separate question with its own tests, and New Jersey has its own. See our guide on the state's ABC test. Ask a preparer or attorney if you are unsure.

Is anything saved?

No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to us.
