Quick answer. For payments made in 2026, Form 1099-NEC and most Form 1099-MISC boxes use a $2,000 threshold instead of $600. Payments made in 2025 used $600. From 2027 the $2,000 may be adjusted for inflation. Form 1099-K from payment apps is back to more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions.

For 2027 and later the $2,000 figures may be adjusted for inflation; the royalty and attorney amounts are as shown in the 2026 instructions. If you withheld federal income tax (backup withholding), you file Form 1099-MISC regardless of the amount.

Form 1099-K: what changed
Payment apps and online marketplaces (third party settlement organizations) file Form 1099-K for a payee only when gross payments are more than $20,000 and there are more than 200 transactions. The IRS says the One, Big, Beautiful Bill retroactively reinstated the threshold that applied before the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 lowered it. Payment card transactions have no minimum. Common questions
Is the 1099-NEC threshold $600 or $2,000?
It depends on the year you paid. Payments in 2025 and earlier use $600. For tax years beginning after 2025, the IRS instructions use $2,000, so 2026 payments are reported at $2,000 or more.
Will $2,000 stay the same in 2027?
Not necessarily. The IRS instructions say the $2,000 amount may be adjusted for inflation beginning in calendar year 2027. Check the instructions for that year before you file.
Did every 1099-MISC amount go to $2,000?
No. Rents, other income and medical and health care payments moved to $2,000. Royalties stay at $10, and gross proceeds paid to an attorney (box 10) stay at $600 in the 2026 instructions.
What is the Form 1099-K threshold now?
A payment app or online marketplace reports a payee when payments are more than $20,000 and there are more than 200 transactions. The IRS says the law reinstated that threshold retroactively. Payment card transactions have no minimum.
Do I send a 1099-NEC for a contractor I paid by card or through an app?
No. The IRS instructions say card and third-party network payments are reported on Form 1099-K by the payment company, not on Form 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC.
