How it works
How it works
The tool adds deposits in transit and subtracts outstanding checks from your statement balance, then compares the result to your books. If they match, you are reconciled. If not, the gap tells you where to look: a swapped-digit slip is always a multiple of 9, an item posted in the wrong direction is twice its amount, and small gaps are often a fee or interest.
If you paste a list of amounts (one per line, payments as negative numbers or in brackets), it also searches them for a single item, a swapped amount, a duplicate, or a pair that explains the difference.
FAQ
About this tool
What does a bank reconciliation difference mean?
After you add deposits in transit and subtract outstanding checks, your bank balance should equal your books for the same date. Any gap is an item that is in one place and not the other, an amount keyed wrong, or an item posted in the wrong direction.
Why does a difference divisible by 9 point to swapped digits?
Swapping two adjacent digits changes a number by a multiple of 9, so a transposed amount always produces a difference divisible by 9. The reverse is not always true, so it is a clue, not proof.
What if I paste a list of amounts?
The tool looks for a single item equal to the difference, one equal to half of it (posted in the wrong direction), a repeated item, an amount whose digits swapped would explain it, and pairs that add up to it. Use negative numbers or brackets for payments.
What if nothing matches?
Then it is probably more than one thing. Work one account and one month at a time, compare the statement to the books line by line, and check that no earlier reconciled month was changed.
Is anything saved?
No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to us.
