Employer registration · all 50 states and DC

Hiring in another state? We register you as an employer there

A first employee in a new state usually means new state accounts: unemployment insurance, income tax withholding where the state has an income tax, and new-hire reporting. With your written authorization, we prepare and submit those registrations and send you the account numbers the state issues.

From $149 per state, plus any state fees at costGovernment, state and court fees are passed through at cost.

What's included

What we do

  • Unemployment insurance (SUTA) employer registration with the state's labor or workforce agency
  • State income tax withholding registration with the revenue department, in states with an income tax
  • New-hire reporting set up with the state's reporting center, with how to report each new hire
  • The account numbers and letters each agency issues, organized for you and your payroll provider
  • Several states in one request, each registered separately

Who it's for

Built for

  • Small businesses with a first remote employee in another state
  • Companies opening a location across a state line
  • Businesses whose payroll provider needs state account numbers before the first run
  • Bookkeepers setting up multi-state payroll

How it works

  1. Tell us the state and first payroll. The state, the business, the first payroll date there and which registrations you want, with your authorization.
  2. Upload the business details. EIN, owner and officer details and addresses, through the secure upload on your request page.
  3. We prepare and submit. Each registration goes in on the agency's own system, as your authorized representative.
  4. You get the account numbers. We send what each agency issues, so payroll can withhold and report from the first paycheck.

What we don't do

  • We don't decide whether you must register in a state. That depends on where the employee works and the state's rules; ask your accountant or the agency.
  • We don't run payroll or file payroll returns with this service.
  • We don't give tax or legal advice.
  • We don't guarantee an agency's approval or how long it takes.

MCC Solutions handles paperwork. We are not lawyers or tax advisers, and nothing here is legal or tax advice.

Where the work happens matters

Unemployment insurance and withholding generally follow where an employee works, but there are exceptions: neighboring states with reciprocity agreements, employees who work in several states, and states with no income tax on wages. The table below shows each state's agencies so you can see what's involved. The decision is yours and your accountant's; we handle the paperwork.

Before you send

  • We'll ask for the EIN, owner details and other tax ID numbers through the secure upload on your request page, never in this form or by email.
  • Each state has its own agencies: we register with the ones in our table for your state and send you the account numbers they issue.
  • State registration fees, where a state charges one, are passed through at cost. We tell you before we submit.
  • Whether you must register depends on the state's rules and your situation. We don't give tax or legal advice; ask your accountant if you're unsure.
  • Agencies set their own processing times, and we don't guarantee approval or timing.

Questions

How much does it cost?

$149 per state for the registrations you choose, plus any state registration fee at cost. If a state charges a fee, we tell you before we submit.

Which registrations do I need?

Usually unemployment insurance and new-hire reporting in the state where the employee works, and state withholding if that state taxes wages. Some states combine registrations on one system. If you choose "Not sure" on the form, we tell you which ones the state's agencies list for a new employer, and you decide.

How long does it take?

Agencies work on their own schedules. Some issue an account number online right away; others mail it weeks later. We submit once we have your complete details and pass on what each agency tells us.

Why do you need my EIN through the request page?

Registrations need tax ID numbers, and we keep them out of forms and email. The secure upload on your request page is the one place we take them.

Do you run payroll too?

Not with this service. We set up the state accounts; your payroll provider or bookkeeper runs payroll and files the returns. Our bookkeeping desk offers payroll separately.

Can you guarantee approval?

No. The agencies decide. If one asks for more information, we tell you what it asked for.
