For Etsy, Shopify and Amazon sellers

Selling online from New Jersey? Your sales tax, filed every quarter

Etsy, Amazon and other marketplaces collect New Jersey sales tax on the sales they process. Your own website, craft fairs and direct sales are still on you, and a quarterly return is due even when you owe nothing.

The rules in plain terms

  • Rate: 6.625% statewide, with no local add-ons.
  • Marketplace sales: a marketplace facilitator collects and remits New Jersey tax on sales made through its platform, so you generally don't collect on those. Keep the platform's reports; you need them in an audit. (NJ Treasury TB-83)
  • Your own sales: your website, pop-ups and direct sales to New Jersey buyers need a sales tax registration and tax collected at checkout.
  • Returns: Form ST-50 every quarter, due January 20, April 20, July 20 and October 20, even with no sales. Sellers who collected more than $30,000 the year before also pay monthly. (NJ Treasury)
  • Selling into other states: each state sets its own threshold for when out-of-state sellers have to register. We track it with you.

What we do each quarter

  • Pull sales from Shopify, Square, your website and each marketplace
  • Separate marketplace-collected sales from the ones you owe on
  • Match tax collected at checkout to what's due
  • File the ST-50 and pay from your account by the 20th
  • Keep a quarterly file of reports and confirmations in case of an audit
  • Flag when you're getting close to another state's threshold

A flat monthly fee, agreed in writing before we start. Add it to monthly bookkeeping or take it on its own. We work by video with sellers anywhere, and file New Jersey returns.

Questions

Does Etsy collect New Jersey sales tax for me?

Marketplace facilitators collect and remit New Jersey sales tax on sales made through their platforms. Sales on your own website or in person are still yours to collect and report.

Do I have to file if I had no sales this quarter?

Yes. New Jersey requires a quarterly return even when no tax is due or there were no sales.

When is the New Jersey sales tax return due?

The ST-50 is due on the 20th after each quarter: January 20, April 20, July 20 and October 20, or the next business day.

Is this tax advice?

No. We prepare and file returns from your records. Questions about what's taxable in a specific case go to your accountant or the Division of Taxation.
