Indiana Notary Starter Kit
Indiana's bond, record check, INBiz and exam steps, the eight-year term and continuing education schedule, the $10 and $25 caps, seal wording, remote authorization for electronic documents, the required disclosure, a checklist, a budget and journal pages.
Eight years, if you keep up with education
An Indiana commission lasts eight years, and renewal costs $75. During the term you take three continuing education courses, one every two years, at $50 each; only Secretary of State courses count. Missing a due date permanently expires the commission, and you would have to apply again.
Report a change of name, address, email, phone or employer within 30 days; a name change also needs a bond rider and a new signature sample. If you leave a job, the seal stays with you, but an employer that paid for the bond may cancel it, and you must get a new one.

Remote notarization in Indiana: electronic documents only
Indiana allows remote online notarization of electronic documents. Paper remote online notarization and remote ink notarization are not allowed. Currently commissioned notaries apply online, complete the remote course and exam, pay $100 and pick a Secretary-approved vendor.
You must be physically in Indiana; the signer may be outside the state. The remote certificate states the act was remote, where you were in Indiana and where the signer was (IC 33-42-17-7). Remote notaries keep an electronic journal of every remote act for at least 10 years. Remote authorization ends with your commission, and the fee is up to $25 per remote act.

Indiana fees and seal
The Secretary's training materials cap a notarial act at $10 and a remote act at $25, with travel at the federal mileage rate. Tell people your fee before you start.
The seal shows "notary public", "state of Indiana", your name exactly as commissioned, "commission number" with your NP0 number, and "my commission expires" with the date; since July 1, 2024 the word "seal" is no longer required. Never just stamp a document: every act needs a signed and sealed notarial certificate.
