Four years, and training each time

An Oregon commission lasts four years (ORS 194.315(4)). The exam is required for every application, new or renewal, and Notary Basics is required for new commissions, including renewals.

Your commission name is your first, middle and last names unless you prove otherwise (ORS 194.240(2)).

Remote notarization in Oregon

Oregon allows remote notarization. Notify the Secretary of State before your first remote act (ORS 194.277(7)), take the Secretary's remote training, and use a platform that meets the vendor rules.

You must be in Oregon; the signer may be elsewhere. Identify the signer by personal knowledge, a credible witness, or at least two types of identity proofing, record the session and keep it at least 10 years. In-person electronic notarization is separate: file the free Electronic Notarization Notice.

Oregon fees, journal and stamp

ORS 194.400 caps a paper or in-person electronic notarial act at $10 and a remote act at $25. Travel is extra only if you explain it's on top of the act fee and not set by law, and the requester agrees in advance. Display your fee list in English.

A journal is required for nearly every act, as a permanent bound register with numbered pages or a tamper-evident electronic journal, kept 10 years after its last act. The official stamp shows the state seal with OFFICIAL STAMP, your name, NOTARY PUBLIC-OREGON, your commission number and your expiration date with the month spelled out.
