Notary document checker
Tell us what you need notarized and where you are signing. You get a short list of what usually applies, what to bring and what to watch for, so your appointment goes smoothly.
How to use this
Name the type of document, not its contents. Pick the state where the signing takes place, because the rules can differ. You will see general guidance on identification, who must be present, witnesses, and what to prepare.
Rules vary by state and by the person or agency asking for the document. When the result says to confirm something, check with that agency, lender, court or attorney before your appointment.
Common questions
Can a notary tell me which type of notarization I need?
No. A notary cannot choose the notarial act for you or give legal advice. The person or agency that asked for the document usually tells you what wording or certificate is required.
Do I sign before I meet the notary?
It depends on the document. For some you sign in front of the notary, and for others you may sign beforehand. Leave it unsigned unless you are told otherwise.
What ID do I need?
A current, government-issued photo ID is the usual starting point. Requirements can vary, so check before your appointment.
Is the result legal advice?
No. It is general information to help you prepare. For legal questions, ask an attorney.
