Moving
Moving to or from New Jersey: the paperwork
The truck is the easy part. Here are the deadlines and forms on each side of a New Jersey move, with the current fees.
Moving to New Jersey
- 60 days: transfer your license, title and registration within 60 days of moving, or before your out-of-state license or registration expires, whichever comes first. (NJ MVC)
- License: your valid out-of-state license plus 6 Points of ID.
- Car: the original title, insurance, and the title and registration applications. Title fee $60 ($85 with a lien). A financed car needs the lender's release form.
- Mail: file a USPS change of address up to 90 days before or 30 days after the move. Online costs $1.25. (USPS)
Moving away and selling your NJ home
- Nonresident seller tax: if you're no longer a New Jersey resident when you sell, you usually make an estimated income tax payment at closing: the gain times the top rate, but never less than 2% of the price, even with no gain. (TB-57(R), FAQ) Ask a tax professional whether an exemption form applies to you.
- The deed has to be acknowledged before an officer. From another state, a notary where you live can take it. (N.J.S.A. 46:14-6.1) Your closing attorney or title company confirms the details.
Signing from where you are
We handle New Jersey closings for sellers who've moved: a notary at your new home's door if it's nearby, or remote online notarization for documents your title company accepts that way. Mail-away signings · Book a notary

Questions
How long do I have to get a NJ license after moving?
60 days from the move, or before your out-of-state license or registration expires, whichever is first.
Do I pay NJ tax when I sell my house after moving away?
Usually an estimated payment at closing: the gain times the top rate, with a minimum of 2% of the price. It's credited against your NJ nonresident return.
Can I sign the deed without flying back?
Usually yes. A notary in your state can take the acknowledgment, and your title company or attorney sends the package.
