Online notarization for signers in Colorado

A commissioned New Jersey notary can notarize for you by secure video while you're in Colorado. Below: the Colorado law on out-of-state notarizations, and who has the final word.

Will Colorado accept a New Jersey online notarization? Generally, yes. Colorado law recognizes notarial acts performed in other states (C.R.S. 24-21-511). The county clerk and recorder or whoever receives your document still decides what it accepts.

What Colorado law says

Colorado gives a notarial act performed in another state the same effect as one performed by a Colorado notarial officer, when a notary public of that state performs it. (C.R.S. 24-21-511)

On our side, New Jersey law treats an online notarization by a New Jersey notary as performed in New Jersey, wherever the signer is (N.J.S.A. 52:7-10.10).

Who decides in Colorado

We didn't find an official Colorado page that adds requirements for out-of-state or electronic notarizations. That isn't a promise there are none. The county clerk and recorder, agency, court or company receiving your document decides what it accepts, so ask them before you book.

Colorado's own online notaries

Colorado notaries can perform remote notarizations on electronic records under C.R.S. 24-21-514.5. The Secretary of State's FAQ says the Colorado notary must be physically in Colorado, the signer must agree to be recorded, and the recording is kept for ten years. (source) That's context: it governs Colorado notaries, not ours.

Before you book

  • Ask the county clerk and recorder (for property) or the office receiving your document whether it takes an electronically notarized document or a printed copy of one.
  • Have a current government photo ID and the complete, unsigned document as a PDF.
  • Online sessions run 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern time, 7 days a week, by appointment.
  • Outside the U.S.? We can notarize for you when the document is for a U.S. court or agency, involves U.S. property, or relates to a transaction connected with the U.S., and signing isn't prohibited where you are. Check your document.
  • Commonly notarized online from Colorado: Affidavits, powers of attorney, school and employment forms, and documents for a sale or refinance after the title company says yes.

Questions

The Colorado FAQ says remote notaries must be in Colorado. Does that rule out a New Jersey notary?

That FAQ describes Colorado's own notaries. Ours is in New Jersey and acts under New Jersey law. Colorado's section on acts performed in another state is 24-21-511.

Is a New Jersey online notarization valid in Colorado?

Generally, yes. Colorado law recognizes notarial acts performed in other states (C.R.S. 24-21-511). The county clerk and recorder or whoever receives your document still decides what it accepts. We are not lawyers, so for anything high-stakes, ask the receiving office or your attorney.
