Online notarization for signers in Iowa

A commissioned New Jersey notary can notarize for you by secure video while you're in Iowa. Below: the area law on out-of-state notarizations, an official caution, and who has the final word.

Will Iowa accept a New Jersey online notarization? Generally, yes. The area law recognizes notarial acts performed in other states (Iowa Code §9B.11). The county recorder or whoever receives your document still decides what it accepts.

What Iowa law says

Iowa gives a notarial act performed in another state the same effect as if an Iowa notarial officer performed it, when a notary public of that state does the act. (Iowa Code §9B.11)

On our side, New Jersey law treats an online notarization by a New Jersey notary as performed in New Jersey, wherever the signer is (N.J.S.A. 52:7-10.10).

What Iowa law says about recording a paper copy

Iowa Code §9B.20(3) says the county recorder may accept for recording a tangible copy of an electronic record affecting real estate when it carries a notarial certificate. 'May' leaves the choice to the recorder. (source)

Iowa's own online notaries

Iowa notaries located in the area can also work with remotely located individuals (Iowa Code §9B.14A, from 2019 Iowa Acts, ch. 44). (source) That's context: it governs Iowa notaries, not ours.
