Online notarization for signers in Kentucky

A commissioned New Jersey notary can notarize for you by secure video while you're in Kentucky. Below: the Kentucky law on out-of-state notarizations, and who has the final word.

Will Kentucky accept a New Jersey online notarization? Generally, yes. Kentucky law recognizes notarial acts performed in other states (KRS 423.345(1)(a)). The county clerk or whoever receives your document still decides what it accepts.

What Kentucky law says

Kentucky gives a notarial act performed in another state the same effect as if performed by a Kentucky notarial officer, when a notary public of that state does it. Created effective January 1, 2020, and amended effective June 29, 2023. (KRS 423.345(1)(a))

On our side, New Jersey law treats an online notarization by a New Jersey notary as performed in New Jersey, wherever the signer is (N.J.S.A. 52:7-10.10).

Who decides in Kentucky

We didn't find an official Kentucky page that adds requirements for out-of-state or electronic notarizations. That isn't a promise there are none. The county clerk, agency, court or company receiving your document decides what it accepts, so ask them before you book.

Kentucky's own online notaries

Kentucky's own remote notarization statute, KRS 423.455, also took effect January 1, 2020. (source) That's context: it governs Kentucky notaries, not ours.
