Online notarization for signers in Louisiana

A commissioned New Jersey notary can notarize for you by secure video while you're in Louisiana. Below: the Louisiana law on out-of-state notarizations, an official caution, and who has the final word.

Will Louisiana accept a New Jersey online notarization? Not for every purpose. Louisiana recognizes notarial acts from other states, but its law carves out remote online notarizations for one purpose, explained below.

The Louisiana exception

R.S. 35:6 excludes remotely notarized acts from other states from authentic-act status. If your Louisiana document has to be an authentic act, an online notarization from New Jersey won't give it that status under this section. Ask the Louisiana attorney or notary handling the matter what form they need before you book anything. (source)

What Louisiana law says

Louisiana treats acts passed before a notary and two witnesses in another state or D.C. as authentic acts with the same force as Louisiana acts, except those performed by remote online notarization. (La. R.S. 35:6)

On our side, New Jersey law treats an online notarization by a New Jersey notary as performed in New Jersey, wherever the signer is (N.J.S.A. 52:7-10.10).

Louisiana's own online notaries

Act 254 of 2020 set up remote online notarization for Louisiana's own notaries. The same act added the remote-online exclusion to R.S. 35:6, and some of its parts have delayed or conditional effective dates. (source) That's context: it governs Louisiana notaries, not ours.

Before you book

  • Ask the parish clerk of court (for property) or the office receiving your document whether it takes an electronically notarized document or a printed copy of one.
  • Have a current government photo ID and the complete, unsigned document as a PDF.
  • Online sessions run 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern time, 7 days a week, by appointment.
  • Outside the U.S.? We can notarize for you when the document is for a U.S. court or agency, involves U.S. property, or relates to a transaction connected with the U.S., and signing isn't prohibited where you are. Check your document.
  • Commonly notarized online from Louisiana: Simple affidavits and letters, once the person receiving them confirms they don't need an authentic act.
