Online notarization for signers in Maine

A commissioned New Jersey notary can notarize for you by secure video while you're in Maine. Below: the Maine law on out-of-state notarizations, and who has the final word.

Will Maine accept a New Jersey online notarization? Generally, yes. Maine law recognizes notarial acts performed in other states (4 M.R.S. §1911 (P.L. 2021, c. 651)). The county registry of deeds or whoever receives your document still decides what it accepts.

What Maine law says

Maine recognizes notarial acts performed in other states: an act performed by a notary public of another state has the same effect as if a Maine notarial officer performed it. (4 M.R.S. §1911 (P.L. 2021, c. 651))

On our side, New Jersey law treats an online notarization by a New Jersey notary as performed in New Jersey, wherever the signer is (N.J.S.A. 52:7-10.10).

Who decides in Maine

We didn't find an official Maine page that adds requirements for out-of-state or electronic notarizations. That isn't a promise there are none. The county registry of deeds, agency, court or company receiving your document decides what it accepts, so ask them before you book.

Maine's own online notaries

The Secretary of State says Maine adopted the Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts effective July 1, 2023, including remote notarization by approved officers using approved providers, not apps like Zoom or FaceTime (4 M.R.S. §1915). (source) That's context: it governs Maine notaries, not ours.
