Online notarization for signers in Vermont

A commissioned New Jersey notary can notarize for you by secure video while you're in Vermont. Below: the Vermont law on out-of-state notarizations, and who has the final word.

Will Vermont accept a New Jersey online notarization? Generally, yes. Vermont law recognizes notarial acts performed in other states (26 V.S.A. §5374). The town clerk or whoever receives your document still decides what it accepts.

What Vermont law says

Vermont gives a notarial act performed in another state the same effect under Vermont law, a rule effective July 1, 2019. (26 V.S.A. §5374)

On our side, New Jersey law treats an online notarization by a New Jersey notary as performed in New Jersey, wherever the signer is (N.J.S.A. 52:7-10.10).

Who decides in Vermont

We didn't find an official Vermont page that adds requirements for out-of-state or electronic notarizations. That isn't a promise there are none. The town clerk, agency, court or company receiving your document decides what it accepts, so ask them before you book.

Vermont's own online notaries

Vermont's own notaries could notarize for remotely located individuals from July 1, 2022 (26 V.S.A. §5379). (source) That's context: it governs Vermont notaries, not ours.
