How it works

How it works

Gross burn is everything you spend in a month. Net burn is what you spend minus what you take in. Runway is your cash divided by your net burn, the number of months before the balance hits zero at today's pace.

The forecast adds each month's cash in and out to your balance. You can add a monthly growth rate for cash in to test a better or worse case. Nothing you type is sent or saved.

FAQ

About this calculator

What is burn rate?

Gross burn is the total cash you spend each month. Net burn is what you spend minus what you take in, so it is the amount your cash balance shrinks by each month.

What is runway?

Runway is how many months your cash will last at the current burn rate. Divide your cash balance by your net burn.

How is cash flow different from profit?

Profit counts sales when you bill and costs when you incur them. Cash flow counts money when it moves. A profitable business can run out of cash if customers pay late or inventory and loan payments are large.

What should I include in cash out?

Everything that leaves the bank: payroll, rent, supplies, subscriptions, loan payments, owner draws and tax payments. Use the average of the last few months.

How do I use the growth rate?

Enter the percent your cash in is expected to rise each month. Leave it at 0 to see today's numbers repeated. Be cautious with growth, and test a flat or falling case too.

Is anything saved?

No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to us.
