How it works

How it works

The calculator subtracts the cost of the items you sold, your card fees, and your event costs (booth, travel, supplies and help) from your sales. What is left is your profit, and dividing it by your hours gives profit per hour.

It also works out how much each extra item adds after its own cost and card fees, then divides your event costs by that to find your break-even. Change the numbers to test a bigger booth, a higher price or a cheaper product before you sign up for the next one.

FAQ

About this calculator

How do I know if a craft fair or market was worth it?

Add up everything the event cost: booth fee, travel, supplies, any help, and card fees. Subtract that and the cost of what you sold from your sales. What is left is profit. Divide it by the hours you worked to get profit per hour, then ask whether that beats what you would earn another way.

Why does the calculator ask how many items sell per transaction?

Card processors charge a percent plus a fixed amount on each transaction. If customers buy two items at a time, the fixed fee is spread over two items. The more items per sale, the lower the fixed fee per item.

What does break-even mean here?

It is the number of items you must sell to cover the booth, travel, supplies and help, after each item's own cost and card fees. Sell fewer and the event loses money.

Does it include sales tax or my own time?

Sales tax is left out because you collect it for the state and pass it through. Your time is only counted in the profit per hour and in the optional hourly target.

Is anything saved?

No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to us.
