Tax deadlines 2027

Partnership and S corporation returns are due March 15, 2027

If your LLC is taxed as a partnership or an S corporation, your return is due in March, a month before individual returns. That makes the books due even earlier.

The dates

Monday, March 15, 2027 is the date the IRS calendar lists for Form 1065 (partnerships) and Form 1120-S (S corporations) for 2026, including giving each partner or shareholder a Schedule K-1. March 15, 2027 is a Monday, so the date does not move.

Wednesday, September 15, 2027 is the extended date. Filing Form 7004 gives an automatic six-month extension to file. For an S corporation the IRS calendar says to deposit your estimated tax when you file the extension. An extension to file is not an extension to pay, so ask your CPA what, if anything, is owed.

Dates checked October 26, 2026 against IRS Publication 509 (2027), early release draft. IRS early release draft of Publication 509 (2027). The final version can change a date. Confirm every date with the IRS and, for New Jersey, the NJ Division of Taxation before you rely on it.

Why the books matter more than the form

The return comes from your books. A preparer who receives unreconciled accounts and an unexplained equity section either spends the first week untangling them or files an extension. Most of the work that decides which happens is bookkeeping, and it is work you can do in the fall.

What to have ready

  1. Every account reconciled through December 31. Bank, credit card, loan and payment-processor accounts, matched to statements.
  2. Owner draws and distributions in the right place. Money moved to owners belongs in equity, not in expenses, and a payment from the business to an owner is not the same as one the owner makes back to it.
  3. Owner loans separated from capital. Money an owner lends the business is a liability. Money contributed as an investment is equity. Mixing them changes the picture.
  4. Payroll agrees with the books. If an S corporation owner is paid through payroll, the payroll reports should match the profit and loss. How much an owner should be paid is a question for your CPA.
  5. Fixed assets listed. Purchases of equipment or vehicles over the year, with dates and costs.
  6. A clean set of reports. Profit and loss, balance sheet and a transaction listing, sent to the preparer with a short note about anything unusual.

The year-end cleanup checklist puts these in order, and the free are my books ready for taxes check scores where you stand.

Questions

Is a single-member LLC due in March?

Not by default. A single-member LLC is generally taxed as a sole proprietorship and reports on the owner's individual return unless it elected to be taxed as a corporation. Ask your CPA which applies to you.

Does the extension give me more time to pay?

No. Form 7004 extends the time to file, not the time to pay. Ask your CPA whether anything is owed.

What are New Jersey's dates for these returns?

New Jersey sets its own dates for business returns. Check the NJ Division of Taxation for the current ones.

Can you prepare the return?

MCC Solutions is not a CPA firm. Tax returns, elections and legal questions stay with your CPA, enrolled agent or attorney. Our part is getting the books accurate and organized so they can do that work faster.
