How it works
How it works
Depreciation per year equals the cost less the salvage value, divided by the useful life in years. The calculator figures the monthly amount and counts full months from the month the asset went into service, so the first and last years can be partial.
FAQ
About this calculator
What is straight-line depreciation?
It spreads the cost of an asset, less its expected salvage value, evenly over its useful life. A $12,000 machine with no salvage value and a 5-year life loses $2,400 of value a year.
What is salvage value?
It is what you expect the asset to be worth at the end of its useful life. If you expect none, enter zero.
Does this match tax depreciation?
Not always. Tax rules often use different methods, lives and first-year rules. This calculator shows book depreciation. Ask your tax preparer what applies to you.
How is the first year figured?
The calculator counts full months from the month the asset was put into service, so an asset started in October gets three months in year one.
Is anything saved?
No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to us.
