2026 estimated tax dates

April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. (IRS) New Jersey uses the same four dates; you owe NJ estimated tax if you expect to owe more than $400 after withholding. (NJ Treasury)

Mileage changed mid-year

Miles drivenBusiness rate
January 1 to June 30, 202672.5 cents a mile
July 1 to December 31, 202676 cents a mile

Keep your log by date so each mile gets the right rate. (Journal of Accountancy, reporting the IRS announcement)

Which 1099s you'll get

  • 1099-K: apps and payment processors file one only when your payments are over $20,000 and over 200 transactions. (IRS) You still owe tax on all of it.
  • 1099-NEC: businesses that pay you $2,000 or more in 2026 send one.

Three habits that save the most

  1. A separate account for gig money.
  2. A mileage log kept as you go, not rebuilt in April.
  3. Set aside a share of every payout for taxes the day it lands.

Questions

What's the 2026 mileage rate?

72.5 cents a mile for January to June and 76 cents a mile for July to December 2026.

Will I get a 1099-K from Uber or DoorDash?

Only if your payments are over $20,000 and over 200 transactions. Many drivers get a 1099-NEC or an annual summary instead. All income is taxable either way.

Do I have to pay quarterly?

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more to the IRS for the year, generally yes. For New Jersey, over $400.
