How it works

How it works

Export your payroll register to CSV (employee, pay date, hours, rate, gross, withholdings, net). The script checks each paycheck against the NJ minimum wage in effect on the pay date (general, small or seasonal employer, tipped cash wage), overtime over 40 hours at 1.5x, and recomputes employee Social Security, Medicare, NJ UI/WF/SWF, TDI and FLI with each year's wage base using year-to-date wages. It flags negative net pay, missing hours, net pay that does not add up, and taxes still withheld after a wage base was reached, then writes a findings report and a corrected-totals CSV. Every rate sits in an editable rates file.

FAQ

About this calculator

What do I need to run it?

Python 3.9 or newer and a CSV export of your payroll register. Nothing is uploaded; it runs entirely on your computer.

Which rates does it use?

2026 and 2027 NJ worker TDI, FLI and UI rates and wage bases from the NJ Department of Labor, the Social Security wage base from SSA, and NJ minimum wages from the Department of Labor's announcements. You can override any of them with a rates file or a command-line flag.

Does it check income-tax withholding?

No. Federal and NJ income-tax withholding depends on each employee's W-4 and NJ-W4, so it is listed but not recomputed.

Is this legal or tax advice?

No. It checks arithmetic against published minimums and rates. Confirm rates on nj.gov and ssa.gov and talk to a payroll professional before correcting filings.
