How it works
How it works
NPV adds up the cash flows after discounting each back to today at your rate, then subtracts the investment. IRR is the rate that makes NPV exactly zero. Payback is how long until cumulative cash covers the cost, and discounted payback does the same using discounted cash. The first cash flow is one period after the investment.
FAQ
About this calculator
What discount rate should I use?
Use the return you could earn on a similar-risk alternative, or your cost of capital. A higher rate makes future cash worth less today. The WACC calculator can help set it.
What does a positive NPV mean?
At your chosen rate, the project returns more than it costs in today's dollars. It is a screening tool, and the forecast cash flows drive the answer.
Why can IRR be missing?
Some cash flow patterns, such as several sign changes, have no single IRR or none at all. NPV still works.
Is anything saved?
No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to us.
Is this tax or financial advice?
No. It is a calculator for general information. Check the numbers against your own records, and ask an accountant before you act on them.
