Six years, with education and the exam each time

A Wyoming commission lasts six years (32-3-120), and education and the exam are required for every new and renewed commission (32-3-121). You may hold only one Wyoming commission at a time.

The Secretary of State may deny, refuse to renew, revoke, suspend or condition a commission (32-3-122). The 2021 law also allows physical notarizations in a bordering state if that state recognizes them.

Remote notarization in Wyoming since July 2021

Remote online notarization of electronic records, and remote ink notarization of paper acknowledgments, have been permanently allowed since July 1, 2021. Tell the Secretary of State before your first remote or electronic act (32-3-120(g)); the application asks.

Record the whole communication on audio and video and keep the recording in your sole possession, with limited exceptions (32-3-118). The statute text our kit read sets no retention period, so ask the Secretary of State. The signer may be in Wyoming, elsewhere in the US or abroad under listed conditions.

The $10 fee, a required journal and the stamp

W.S. 32-3-126 caps each notarial act at $10, and $10 per person when several sign one record. Technology and travel fees (travel up to the IRS mileage rate) must be agreed in advance and explained as separate and not set by law.

A journal of all your notarial acts is required (32-3-118(d)), paper or electronic, including refusals and certificate corrections, kept secure under your sole control; the Secretary of State recommends keeping it for your entire term. The stamp is a rectangle about 1 by 2 1/2 inches, in blue or black ink, with your commission name, "Notary Public", "State of Wyoming", your commission ID number and "My commission expires"; no county and no great seal.
