Different forms, different rules
There are federal forms that sponsors use for immigrants and a separate form used for certain visitors. Some forms are signed under penalty of perjury and do not require a notary. Others, or other foreign-country versions, may ask for a notary. Check the instructions printed on the form you are using.
Because rules and forms are updated, always get the latest version from the official source.
Where a notary may appear
A notary may be requested for a sponsor's accompanying statements, for a joint sponsor's attestations, for foreign consulates that want notarized supporting letters, or for statements from family members. The notary can handle those if the sponsor brings the document ready.
Never ask a notary to fill out or choose a form for you. That would be unauthorized practice.
What the notary checks
The sponsor appears, presents valid photo ID, and signs under observation when a jurat is required. The notary checks name spelling, signature, the date, and completes the certificate. They do not verify income, citizenship, tax documents or eligibility.
If the sponsor's ID name differs from tax records, the sponsor should explain to the agency, not to the notary.
Supporting records
Sponsors often send tax transcripts, proof of employment and bank statements. Those do not usually need notarization. Make copies of every page and keep a checklist. Keep a record of mailing receipts.
If a document is written in another language, a translation with a translator's statement may be needed.
Get help where it counts
For questions about eligibility, income thresholds or consequences of signing, speak with an immigration attorney or accredited representative. Be careful of anyone who offers legal help but is neither an attorney nor an accredited representative.
A mobile notary can meet at your home or workplace for the sworn signature itself.
A careful routine for the signing day
Lay out the printed form, ID, and any supporting statements in order. Read the signature section aloud to yourself. If the form says it is signed under penalty of perjury, understand that no oath by the notary is needed unless a separate page asks for one.
If a notary is requested for a joint sponsor's statement, schedule that signing ahead of the filing date. Joint sponsors often live elsewhere, so remote or mobile options may help. Each person signs their own page and uses their own ID.
Finally, make a complete copy before mailing. Use a trackable service. If an agency later asks for corrections, the copy shows exactly what you sent. Do not change numbers after signing without redoing the signature on that page.
Sponsors sometimes worry that a notary will review their finances. That is not the case. The notary will not ask about income, tax filings or household size, and will not keep copies of anything beyond the journal entry for the act. If you feel nervous, bring a list of questions for your attorney or accredited representative and treat the notary visit as a short administrative step.

A notary can take a translator's sworn statement but does not certify the translation by that role alone.
