The basic math
The tip is the bill times the tip percentage. The total is the bill plus the tip. Each share is the total divided by the number of people. For a $142.50 bill with an 18% tip, the tip is $25.65 and the total is $168.15. Split three ways, each person pays $56.05, including $8.55 of tip.
Before or after tax?
Customs differ. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, and others on the total. Choose one and use it consistently for the whole table. Also check whether the restaurant has already added a service charge or an automatic gratuity for larger parties, so you do not tip twice by accident.
When orders are uneven
Have each person total their own items, then split shared items such as appetizers evenly. Apply the same tip percentage to each person's amount. Another approach is an even split with the person who ordered less rounding up to be generous. Either is fine as long as the table agrees before the bill arrives.
Rounding
Rounding each share up to the next dollar usually leaves the server a slightly larger tip. If you are paying by card, make sure the total of the individual payments covers the full check.

Common questions
What percentage should I tip?
It varies by country, venue and service. Use the figure that fits where you are and the service you received.
Should I tip on discounts or coupons?
Many people tip on the amount before the discount, since the server did the same work. It is a courtesy rather than a rule.
Do I tip for takeout?
Customs vary. Some people leave a small tip, others do not.
