How it works

How it works

The current ratio is current assets divided by current liabilities. The quick ratio uses only cash and receivables, leaving out inventory. The cash ratio uses cash alone. Working capital is current assets minus current liabilities.

Take the figures from your balance sheet. A ratio under 1 means you owe more within a year than you hold in current assets.

FAQ

About this calculator

What is the current ratio?

Current assets divided by current liabilities. It shows whether what you own that turns into cash within a year covers what you owe within a year.

What is the quick ratio?

Cash plus receivables divided by current liabilities. It leaves out inventory, which can take time to sell.

Is there a good number?

It depends on the industry and on how quickly cash comes in. A ratio below 1 means current liabilities are bigger than current assets. Compare your own numbers over time and with similar businesses.

What counts as a current liability?

Bills and debts due within a year: payables, credit cards, the part of loans due this year, taxes owed and customer deposits.

Where do I find the numbers?

On your balance sheet. If your books are behind, update them first, because the ratios are only as good as the inputs.

Is anything saved?

No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to us.
