How it works
How it works
The standard deduction is business miles x the rate per mile. The IRS rate for 2026 is 72.5 cents for January through June and 76 cents for July through December, so if you drove in both periods, run each period's miles separately and add the results.
For actual costs, enter your total miles, gas, insurance, repairs and depreciation. The calculator multiplies the costs by your business share of the driving. Parking and tolls are tracked separately. Check IRS rules for your vehicle before choosing a method.
FAQ
About this calculator
What is the standard mileage rate for 2026?
The IRS set the business rate at 72.5 cents per mile for January 1 through June 30, 2026, and raised it to 76 cents per mile for July 1 through December 31, 2026. If you drove in both periods, add up the miles for each period and apply that period's rate. The IRS posts the rates on its standard mileage rates page.
What does the standard rate cover?
It is meant to cover the cost of operating the vehicle, including gas, repairs, insurance and depreciation. Parking fees and tolls for business trips are generally added on top.
What counts as business miles?
Driving between work locations, to clients and to pick up supplies can count. Commuting from home to your regular workplace generally does not. Keep a log with the date, miles, place and purpose of each trip.
Standard rate or actual costs?
Actual costs means tracking gas, repairs, insurance and depreciation and deducting the business share. The standard rate is simpler. Which one you may use depends on IRS rules for your vehicle and when you started using it for business, so ask your preparer before choosing.
Can I change the rate in the calculator?
Yes. The rate field is in cents per mile. If the IRS changes the rate, type the new one.
Is anything saved?
No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to us.
