Sources: the US Department of Labor's state minimum wage and tipped wage tables and each state's labor agency, governor or statute page, checked November 2026. New Jersey's 2027 rates ($16.48 for most employers) are covered in our New Jersey employer compliance check-up and the New Jersey payroll register checker.
Reading the changes
Most 2027 increases follow an inflation formula written into state law: Colorado, Connecticut, Minnesota, Washington announced theirs in the second half of 2026. California, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Virginia reach a fixed step set by statute or ballot measure. Hawaii stays at $16.00 until its next step on January 1, 2028.
Mid-year states matter for payroll calendars. District of Columbia and Oregon change on July 1, 2027, so a pay period that straddles the date needs the old rate for days before it and the new rate after. Florida's $15.00 step took effect September 30, 2026, and US DOL lists its next adjustment for January 1, 2028.
Tipped employees
Where a state allows a tip credit, the employer pays a lower cash wage and tips make up the rest; if they don't, the employer pays the difference. Alaska, California, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Washington don't allow a tip credit at all, so tipped staff get the full minimum. In states where the cash wage is a fixed share of the minimum (Ohio, Maine, South Dakota, Michigan's rising percentage) it moves on the same date.
Local rates
Cities and counties in several states set their own higher minimum. We mark Yes only where an official state page (or the city's own page) says so and link it; we don't list every local rate here. A business pays the highest rate that applies where the work is done.
General information, not legal advice, checked November 2026 against the US Department of Labor and each state's official pages linked in the table. A state can change a rate after we check, cities and counties can set higher rates, and exemptions depend on the job and the employer. Before you change payroll, confirm the rate on the state labor department's site or with your payroll provider or employment attorney. MCC Solutions isn't affiliated with any government agency.
Common questions
Which states raise the minimum wage on January 1, 2027?
14 on the official pages we checked: California ($17.40), Colorado ($15.71), Connecticut ($17.48), Maine ($15.70), Michigan ($15.00), Minnesota ($11.87), Montana ($11.20), Nebraska ($15.26), New Jersey ($16.48), Ohio ($11.40), Rhode Island ($17.00), South Dakota ($12.30), Virginia ($13.75), Washington ($17.73). The 2027 figure isn't confirmed yet for Alaska, Arizona, District of Columbia, Missouri, Oregon, Vermont.
Which states change the minimum wage in the middle of 2027?
District of Columbia (July 1, 2027), Oregon (July 1, 2027) adjust on dates other than January 1. Their new amounts are set by an inflation formula and are announced a few months ahead, so the table shows the rate that applies until then.
What is the highest state minimum wage in 2027?
Among confirmed 2027 rates, Washington is highest at $17.73. Some cities and counties set higher local rates than any state; the Local rates column links the official page where one says so.
What happens in states without a minimum wage law, or with one below $7.25?
Employers covered by the federal Fair Labor Standards Act pay the federal $7.25. That applies in 20 jurisdictions in the table, marked with F where a state rate below $7.25 exists. The federal rate hasn't changed since 2009, per the US Department of Labor.
How much does a minimum wage change add to payroll?
Multiply the hourly increase by the hours worked. The largest confirmed 2027 increase here is Michigan's $1.27 an hour, about $50.80 a week for a 40-hour employee before employer taxes. The payroll change calculator does it for a whole staff list.
Why does a state show 'Not announced'?
Its 2027 rate follows an inflation formula and the state hadn't published the number on a page we could open in November 2026, or the official pages we read didn't settle it. We leave it blank rather than estimate; the source link is where the state will post it.
