How it works

How it works

Export orders from Shopify, Etsy, Amazon, eBay or Square (or any CSV with date, amount, tax and state). The script detects each platform from its headers and puts every line in one bucket: marketplace facilitator (the platform collected and remitted NJ tax), your own NJ taxable sales, NJ exempt items such as most clothing (from an editable keyword list), or out-of-state. It totals each quarter for the ST-50 with tax due at 6.625% next to the tax you actually collected and the due date, flags the $30,000 monthly-payment threshold, and lists sales by destination state with warnings when a state nears an economic-nexus threshold you can edit. Everything runs on your computer.

FAQ

About this calculator

What do I need to run it?

Python 3.9 or newer (free from python.org) and your order export files. No other installs, no account, and no internet connection is needed.

Which exports does it read?

Shopify order exports, Etsy sold orders or sold order items, Amazon order reports (tab or comma separated), eBay order reports, Square item details, and a generic CSV with date, amount, tax, state and channel columns.

How does it know what is exempt?

It uses an editable keyword list. By default clothing and footwear are exempt and accessories like jewelry, handbags and watches are taxable, following the NJ Division of Taxation clothing guidance. Review the matched rule shown for each line.

Is this tax advice?

No. It sorts and totals your data using published NJ rates and rules so you can prepare or check a return. Confirm the figures on nj.gov or with a tax professional before filing.
