How it works

How it works

Every amount is converted to milliliters and then to the unit you pick. A US cup is 236.588 mL, a tablespoon is 14.787 mL and a teaspoon is 4.929 mL, so 1 cup is 16 tablespoons or 48 teaspoons. These are US customary measures, not imperial ones.

Example: 1 cup is 236.588 mL, so 2 cups are 473.18 mL, which is one US pint. A recipe that calls for 3/4 cup of milk needs 177.44 mL, or 12 tablespoons. A quart is 4 cups, 32 fluid ounces or 946.35 mL.

FAQ

About this calculator

How many tablespoons are in a cup?

16. There are also 48 teaspoons and 8 fluid ounces in a cup.

Is a UK cup the same?

No. Imperial and metric cups differ from the US cup. This converter uses US customary measures.

Do cups and ounces of weight match?

No. Fluid ounces measure volume and ounces measure weight. A cup of flour weighs much less than a cup of honey, so weigh dry ingredients if a recipe gives grams.

Can I convert a whole recipe?

Use the recipe scaler to change servings, then this tool to change units.

Is anything saved?

No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to us.

Volume is not weight

A cup of water weighs about 236 grams, but a cup of flour weighs far less and a cup of honey far more. When a recipe gives weights, use a scale rather than a measuring cup.
