How it works

How it works

The scale factor is wanted servings divided by original servings. Each amount at the start of a line is multiplied by it, then shown to the nearest eighth where that is close, such as 1 1/2 or 3/4. Lines with no leading number are kept as they are.

Example: a recipe for 4 that needs 2 cups of flour and 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt, scaled to 6 servings, uses a factor of 1.5. That is 3 cups of flour and 2 1/4 teaspoons of salt. Scaled down to 2 servings, the factor is 0.5, giving 1 cup of flour and 3/4 teaspoon of salt.

FAQ

About this calculator

Does everything scale evenly?

Amounts do, but cooking does not always. Salt, spices and leavening are best increased a little less than the factor and adjusted by taste. Pan size and baking time often change too.

What formats are read?

Whole numbers, decimals, fractions like 1/2, mixed numbers like 1 1/2 and the symbols for half, third, quarter and three quarters at the start of a line.

What about eggs that come out as a half?

Round to a whole egg, or beat one egg and use half by weight or volume.

Is anything saved?

No. The scaling runs in your browser and nothing you paste is sent to us.
