How it works
How it works
Fahrenheit = Celsius x 9 / 5 + 32, and Celsius = (Fahrenheit - 32) x 5 / 9. Kelvin is Celsius plus 273.15. Water freezes at 0 C (32 F) and boils at 100 C (212 F) at sea level.
Example: 350 F is (350 - 32) x 5 / 9 = 176.67 C, which most recipes call 175 C or 180 C. A fever of 100.4 F is 38 C. A winter day of -5 C is 23 F. Room temperature of 20 C is 68 F, and 300 K is about 26.85 C.
FAQ
About this calculator
How do I convert Fahrenheit to Celsius in my head?
Subtract 32 and multiply by about 0.55. For a quick estimate, subtract 30 and halve it, which is close for everyday temperatures.
At what temperature are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal?
At -40. It is the one point where both scales show the same number.
What is 350 F in Celsius?
About 177 C, a common oven setting. Many recipes round it to 175 C.
Can the temperature be below zero?
Yes, but nothing can be colder than absolute zero, which is -273.15 C, -459.67 F or 0 K.
Is anything saved?
No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to us.

Common temperatures
Reference points to check your answer against.
| What | Celsius | Fahrenheit |
|---|---|---|
| Water freezes | 0 C | 32 F |
| Room temperature | 20 C | 68 F |
| Normal body temperature | 37 C | 98.6 F |
| Water boils (sea level) | 100 C | 212 F |
| Slow oven | 150 C | 302 F |
| Moderate oven | 180 C | 356 F |
| Hot oven | 220 C | 428 F |
Oven settings
Recipes round oven temperatures. 350 F is 176.7 C, usually written as 175 C or 180 C. Fan ovens are often set about 20 C lower than the conventional setting, so check your oven's manual.
Why the formulas have 32 in them
The two scales start at different zero points and use different step sizes. A step of 1 C equals a step of 1.8 F, and 0 C is 32 F, so you scale by 9/5 and then add 32.
