How it works

How it works

Multiply the decimal hours by 60 for total minutes. The whole part is the hours, and the decimal part times 60 is the leftover minutes. So 7.75 hours is 7 hours and 0.75 x 60 = 45 minutes. To go back, divide minutes by 60.

Example: 7.75 hours is 7 hours and 45 minutes, or 465 minutes in total. 8.1 hours is 8 hours and 6 minutes. Going the other way, 20 minutes is 20 / 60 = 0.3333 hours, which most timesheets round to 0.33 or 0.34 depending on policy.

FAQ

About this calculator

Why is 0.5 hours 30 minutes?

Because an hour has 60 minutes, and half of 60 is 30.

Tenths of an hour

Each 0.1 hour is 6 minutes, so 0.1 = 6 min, 0.2 = 12 min, 0.3 = 18 min, 0.4 = 24 min, 0.5 = 30 min, 0.6 = 36 min, 0.7 = 42 min, 0.8 = 48 min and 0.9 = 54 min.

A common mix-up

A timesheet that says 7.30 can mean 7.30 hours (7 hours 18 minutes) or 7 hours 30 minutes. Check which format the system uses before you add up a week, because mixing the two changes the total.

Adding a week of decimal hours

Add the decimal figures, then convert the total once. For example 7.75 + 8.25 + 8.5 + 7.5 + 6.25 = 38.25 hours, which is 38 hours and 15 minutes.
