How it works
How it works
Add the costs you would still have to pay if your income stopped: housing, utilities, groceries, transportation, insurance, minimum debt payments and anything else you cannot skip. Multiply by the number of months you want covered. Subtract what you have saved to see what is left, then divide by what you can add each month for the time it takes.
FAQ
About this calculator
How many months should I cover?
There is no single answer. People with steady pay often choose fewer months than people with irregular income. Pick a number you can reach and revisit it.
What counts as a must-pay cost?
Costs you would still owe if income stopped. Leave out dining out, subscriptions you could cancel and savings contributions.
Where should the money be kept?
Somewhere you can reach quickly that does not move up and down in value, such as a savings account. Ask your bank about what is insured.
Is anything saved?
No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to us.
Is this tax or financial advice?
No. It is a calculator for general information. Check the numbers against your own records, and ask an accountant before you act on them.
