How it works
How it works
To add or subtract, cross-multiply to a common denominator: a/b + c/d = (a x d + c x b) / (b x d). To multiply, multiply the tops and the bottoms. To divide, flip the second fraction and multiply. Every answer is reduced by the greatest common divisor of its top and bottom.
Example: 1/2 + 1/3 = (1 x 3 + 1 x 2) / (2 x 3) = 5/6, about 0.8333. 3/4 x 2/3 = 6/12 = 1/2. 3/4 divided by 1/2 = 3/4 x 2/1 = 6/4, which simplifies to 3/2 or 1 1/2.

About this calculator
How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Rewrite both over a common denominator, then add the tops. 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
How do you divide fractions?
Flip the second fraction and multiply: 3/4 divided by 1/2 = 3/4 x 2/1 = 6/4 = 1 1/2.
What is a mixed number?
A whole number plus a proper fraction, such as 1 1/2 for 3/2.
