How it works
How it works
An equal split divides the rent by the number of people. An income split gives each person a share equal to their income divided by the combined income, times the rent.
Example: for $2,400 rent, an equal split between two people is $1,200 each. If one earns $4,000 a month and the other $2,000, splitting by income gives shares of 66.7% and 33.3%, which is $1,600 and $800. Roommates sometimes choose a middle path or adjust for room size.
