How it works
Fixed costs are what you pay every month no matter how much you sell, such as rent, software, insurance and a salary. Variable cost is what each sale costs you, such as materials, travel or a subcontractor's pay. Your contribution on each sale is the price minus the variable cost.
Divide your fixed costs by the contribution to get the number of sales you need to break even. Add a profit goal and the calculator tells you how many sales reach it. Nothing you type is sent or saved.
FAQ
About this calculator
What is a break-even point?
It is the number of sales a month at which your income exactly covers your costs, with no profit and no loss. Every sale after that adds to profit.
What counts as a fixed cost?
Costs you pay no matter how much you sell: rent, insurance, software, loan payments and salaries. Put the monthly total in the fixed costs box.
What counts as the cost of each sale?
Costs that rise with each sale, such as materials, mileage, card fees and a subcontractor's pay. Do not include your own time unless you pay yourself per job.
Does this include taxes?
No. It works with your pre-tax profit. Use the self-employed tax calculator to see what to set aside.
Is my data saved?
No. The math runs in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us.
