How it works
How it works
The mean is the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value after sorting, or the average of the two middle values. The mode is the value that appears most often.
Example: for 1, 2, 2, 3 and 10, the sum is 18 and the mean is 3.6. The median, the middle value, is 2. The mode is 2 because it appears twice. The single large value of 10 pulls the mean above the median, which is why the median is often better for incomes and home prices.
FAQ
About this calculator
Mean or median?
The mean is pulled by very large or small values. The median is steadier when a few values are extreme.
Can there be more than one mode?
Yes. Several values can tie. If nothing repeats, there is no mode.
What separators work?
Commas, spaces, semicolons or new lines. Text that is not a number is skipped.
Is anything saved?
No. The math runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to us.
