The value is converted to meters and then to the unit you pick. 1 inch is exactly 0.0254 meters, 1 foot is exactly 0.3048 meters and 1 mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters.
Example: 1 mile is exactly 1,609.344 meters, which is 5,280 feet or 1,760 yards. A 100 foot run is 30.48 meters. To go from inches to centimeters, multiply by 2.54. To go from kilometers to miles, divide by 1.609344. Pick the same unit on both sides to confirm the tool returns your starting number, a quick way to check you chose the right units.
