Wikipedia's table of Apostille Convention parties lists Portugal as a party, with the convention in force there since 4 February 1969. A U.S. public document meant for use in Portugal is normally authenticated with an apostille rather than by embassy legalization. The receiving office has the last word on what it accepts.

From Lisbon to a New Jersey notary

- Pick a time for a video session. Have an unexpired government photo ID ready, along with a device that has a camera, a microphone and a steady connection.
- Sign on screen. Your identity is verified online, you sign electronically while the notary watches, and the notary adds an electronic seal.
- Get the finished document. The session is recorded, and the recording is kept for as long as the law requires.

What if my document is in Portuguese or for use in Portugal?
