Domain registration
Your domain should be registered to you or your business, with your email on the account. Look up your domain on a WHOIS service or log in to the registrar. If you cannot, ask your provider for access.
Hosting and website admin
You should have admin logins for your hosting account and website. If the site runs on a platform, you should be the account owner.
Google accounts
Your Business Profile, Search Console and analytics should be owned by an account you control, with your provider added as a user.
How to take control
Ask for transfer or admin access in writing. Domain transfers use an authorization code and normally take a few days. Keep renewal reminders on a calendar.
Protect yourself
Use a business email you control for all accounts. Turn on two-step sign-in. Store logins in a password manager.
Common questions
What if my developer will not hand over the domain?
Ask in writing first. If the domain is in their name, a registrar dispute process or an attorney may be needed. Prevention is much easier.
Do I need to renew the domain every year?
Registrations expire. Turn on auto-renew and keep a valid payment card and email on file.
